Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how Better Built Apps LLC ("Better Built Apps," "we," "us") handles data in connection with the Lifting Lab app for iOS (the "Application"). It is written to describe what Lifting Lab actually does, not a generic template, because the honest answer to most of these questions is: your training data never leaves your device and your own iCloud account.

Company Information

For any question about this policy or your data, use that form.

There is no account, and no server holding your training data

Lifting Lab does not require or offer account registration. There is no username, no password, and no Better Built Apps server that receives, stores, or has visibility into your workouts, personal records, video, or profile information.

Your data is stored in two places, both under your own control:

Sessions, programs, personal records, your profile, and your gym setup sync automatically between your own devices this way when iCloud is available. If iCloud can't be reached, the app keeps working fully offline using the local copy on your device.

Health data

With your permission, Lifting Lab reads the following from Apple Health:

With your permission, Lifting Lab also writes your finished workouts to Apple Health, so they appear in the Fitness app and count toward your Activity rings.

Every one of these is optional and can be turned off individually in Settings. None of it is requested up front: iOS asks for each permission only when you first use the specific feature that needs it, with an explanation of why beforehand. Health data is read and written through Apple's HealthKit store on your device. We do not receive a copy of it, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with any third party.

Camera, video, and on-device body tracking

Lifting Lab's bar-path analysis feature uses your device's camera to record video of a lift, with your permission, so it can be analyzed. That analysis, including tracking the barbell and estimating your body's position through the lift, runs entirely on your device using Apple's built in Vision framework. No video, image, or position data generated by this analysis is transmitted to Better Built Apps LLC or to any third party, at any point, unless you deliberately choose to export or share a specific clip yourself.

We're describing this processing explicitly and separately from the rest of this policy, even though it never leaves your device, because it involves estimating a body's position and movement, which some jurisdictions treat as sensitive or biometric information regardless of where the processing happens. Nothing about this analysis is used to identify you as a person; it exists only to measure a barbell's path and give you feedback on your technique.

Recordings you make in the app are also saved to your device's Photos library as a backup, so switching phones never loses your analysis history. Whether the video files themselves also sync through iCloud is a separate, opt-in setting, kept apart from the rest of sync so filming does not silently consume a large amount of your iCloud storage.

Sharing a program or session with a coach

If you use Lifting Lab's coaching features, you can export a training program or a completed session as a file (a .liftinglab or .liftinglabsession file) and send it to someone directly, using your device's own share sheet: AirDrop, Mail, Messages, or Files. This is a transfer you initiate, directly between devices. It does not pass through, and is never visible to, Better Built Apps LLC. If you are a coach entering information about an athlete you train, that information is stored on your own device and, like everything else described in this policy, is never sent to us.

What we do not do

If you contact us

If you reach us through the contact form on our website, we keep your message and the contact details you provide so we can respond to you. We do not use them for marketing unless you separately agree to that, and we do not share them with anyone else.

Children's privacy

Lifting Lab is not intended for children under 16 years of age, or a higher age of digital consent where one applies under local law. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children through the app, and because there is no account system, we have no practical way to collect it even if a child used the app directly.

Lifting Lab's coaching features let an adult coach enter and manage training information about the athletes they work with, and youth athletes are common in competitive weightlifting. If you are a coach using these features for an athlete who is a minor, you are responsible for that athlete's information: it is stored on your own device, under your control, and, as explained above, Better Built Apps LLC never receives a copy of it regardless of the athlete's age.

Your data, your control

Because your training data lives on your device and, optionally, in your own iCloud account rather than on our systems, you are the one who controls its retention:

Because we hold no copy of your training data, there is nothing on our end to delete when you take any of these steps, we simply never had it. The one thing we do hold is any correspondence you've sent us directly (for example, through our contact form), which we retain only as long as needed to handle it, and which you can ask us to delete at any time through that same contact form.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws like the EU/UK GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), including the right to know what personal data is held about you, to correct it, to delete it, to receive a copy of it, and to object to or restrict certain processing.

For the vast majority of your data, the practical way to exercise these rights is directly, in the app or in your device's iCloud settings, since that's where your data actually lives and we have no access to it. For anything we do hold (your correspondence with us, described above), reach us through the contact form and we will respond within the time required by applicable law. If you believe your rights have been violated, you may also contact your local data protection authority.

Security

Your training data benefits from the security of your device and your own Apple ID and iCloud account, both of which are protected by Apple's platform security. Because we never receive a copy of your data, there is no central Better Built Apps database of user training data to be breached.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. We'll post the updated version here with a new effective date. If a change is significant, we'll make a reasonable effort to let you know inside the app.
